Golfmark award 17/04/2008

SALTFORD has become the first golf club in Somerset to gain the prestigious Golfmark award.

The English Golf Union scheme identifies and recognises junior and beginner friendly golf and assessed the Saltford club for its coaching and playing facilities, its club environment along with child protection and duty of care.

The club has now opened a four hole par three academy course to allow juniors of all ages to sharpen up their skills before they venture onto the main course where special forward teeing positions have been installed, shortening the length of holes for youngsters.

Saltford’s junior organiser David Phillips said: “We are delighted to get this award which is recognised by school authorities showing the club is environmentally safe and open to everyone.

“We have club nights for boys and girls from the age of six upwards on alternate Monday evenings for £2 which includes coaching, a competition with prizes and chips afterwards in the clubhouse.”

Alan King, chairman of the Somerset Golf partnership, said: “Well done to Saltford, a lot of work has been done to put this in place. The club has excellent practice facilities and coaching arrangements and is now in a position with this award to attract extra funding.

'It has achieved the national standard for running a club and junior golf with its practice facilities and coaching arrangements which have been examined and tested by the EGU.'

The award, which has only gone to 70 clubs in England, also earns Saltford Clubmark accreditation which is recognised by Sport England. Officials from the Somerset Golf Union, Somerset Golf partnership visited Saltford to hand over a commemorative plaque to the club.
