Golf Club

Our Ladies are an active, vibrant and integral section of SALTFORD GOLF CLUB with around 80 playing members across a broad handicap and age range. Our aim is to organise a variety of competitions to appeal to golfers of all abilities. Some are team games with a fun element but there are also plenty of individual qualifying Medal, Stableford & Trophy competitions for handicap purposes.

The Ladies Section has priority tee times on a Wednesday from 10.00 until 12.30 but we also run weekend Medals plus Alternate Days for certain competitions. There are a number of club Mixed competitions usually on Sundays or Bank Holidays throughout the playing season as well as Mixed Friendlies against other clubs.

Saltford Golf Club also organise a Ladies Open and a Mixed Opens which are very popular and fill up quickly.

Open Competitions

Two League teams play in the Bristol & District Alliance. Our A and B team each play six away and six home fixtures providing a fantastic opportunity for competitive golf against other clubs in the area. Players for these matches are selected in handicap order and matches are played off scratch.

For ladies who prefer more sociable though still competitive golf there are around 10 friendly matches per year against other local clubs. This is a great way for newer golfers to learn from more experienced ladies playing in a Greensomes format.

All ladies are automatically members of the Somerset Ladies County Golf Association so may play in County events subject to competition conditions.

Beginners can start by taking lessons with our Head PGA Professional Chris Coles. Everyone can play golf as the handicap system allows for different ability levels enabling you to play with and against better golfers. So, come and join us to benefit from our beautiful course with its stunning views, a lovely club house and lots of social events where you can meet new friends.

Please contact the Operations Manager for any further information.

Welcome to the Seniors Section of the Saltford Golf Club website.

We have a very active and vibrant Seniors Section; the Section welcomes all male golfers at Saltford who automatically become Seniors on their 55th birthday.

Seniors have ‘priority’ on Tuesday mornings. Each Tuesday morning the Seniors Section has a ‘Roll Up’ at 10:00. All Seniors are welcome to participate in this and it is also a good way of meeting more mature golfers at the club. Additionally, an informal roll up takes place on Thursdays.

The Section organises a number of handicap qualifying competitions including the Saltford Seniors Open during the year. We also organise several Bowmakers and better ball competitions and a 3 club and putter competition.

The Seniors play four ball better ball in matches against other clubs in the area during the season. The section operates a system where members volunteer on a match by match basis to captain each match.  A fixture list is posted on the seniors’ board in the men’s changing rooms. Please contact the Seniors Matches Secretary, if you are interested in participation in any of these matches or even captaining one!

If you require any other information regarding the Seniors Section please contact any member of the Seniors Committee, who will be only too pleased to help. Committee members’ details are posted on the notice board in the men’s changing rooms.

Seniors Section

Saltford Golf Club runs a large, enthusiastic and very successful junior section under the leadership of David Phillips, Bob Perkins, Tim Parker, Dave Owen and Rachel John, all of whom have the latest DBS certification.

Is your Son / Daughter thinking of trying golf?

Saltford Golf Club is the perfect place to try your hand at golf. We have a very safety concious group of volunteers and golf professionals who know how to make those initial golf lessons both great fun and challenging. We hold a wide selection of junior golf clubs that are available to borrow by any child.

Junior Club Nights

We run junior club nights on alternate Sundays throughout the year, usually begining in late March. These club nights are open to any child who would like to try golf, as well as the children who already have membership at the golf club. The session begins at 4pm and registration occurs in the driving range ahead of the session starting. The cost is £2.50 per child for the 1 hour coaching and for an optional extra £2.50 then some food in the clubhouse afterwards. Some children will also be invited to play on our Academy Course immediately after the coaching session. Each club night is a stand alone event, so if you miss any sessions, it does not matter, just attend the sessions that are convenient for you. Parents and friends are welcome to watch your child during the activities, but if you should wish to retire to the clubhouse for refreshments you are most welcome.

If you would like to know more about introducing your child to golf, please contact David Phillips, one of our Junior Organisers on 07968873130.

Outreach

Each year we visit local primary schools introducing young children of all ages and abilities to Tri-Golf (plastic clubs and tennis-like balls). We pride ourselves on making the sessions fun as well as instructive. In addition, we bring schools to our golf club for golf related sports days and Tri-Golf galas. Each year we run an introductory golf morning for Russian children who are visiting the UK on a charity run holiday.

Our aim is to introduce golf to as many children as possible by making golf accessible to everyone and would welcome the opportunity of working with any youth groups or groups from other sports.

Coaching

Under the guidance of our teaching professionals, we all take junior coaching very seriously at Saltford Golf Club. The coaching programme is both varied and inclusive and this takes place on many levels from club night coaching for the absolute beginner to county sponsored coaching for the more experienced players. On Monday evenings we run specific boys and girls coaching sessions. These sessions are extremely popular and we regularly have 25+ children attending each week.

During the holiday periods, our Head Professional and his assistants run golf camps which are full day programmes covering all aspects of the game.

In addition to group lessons, our professional team arrange individual lessons for those who prefer inidividual tuition. These are more expensive but they will receive the coaches undivided attention for the entire lesson.

Please contact our Head Professional Chris Coles if you would like to find out more about our coaching programmes on 01225 873513 (Option 1).

Whatever the ability level of the junior, there is a suitable coaching scheme at Saltford.

Membership Options

After your child has attended a few club nights and has shown an appropriate level of abilty, the professionals will make the decision that they are now ready to progress to the academy course. This doesn't mean that the lessons must end, they are always welcome to book lessons at any time.

Membership Application Form

There are three categories of junior membership and there is a clear formalised progression from one category to the next which will enable your son or daughter to see exactly how he/she is doing and what needs to be done to progress to the next level:

Academy Course - the academy course consists of 6 simple short holes located at the end of our driving range and is predominatley, but not exclusively, for younger juniors who are new to the game. When Academy juniors are able to go around the Academy course within a certain number of shots, are are able to pass a very brief assessment by one of the professional team, they then progress to the Blue Tees.

- Blue Tee Course - Each hole on the main course has a blue tee, situated some distance in front of the main tees. This gives juniors the chance to play each hole on the course without the long carries from the tee to the fairways, which can be daunting for younger juniors. Each junior is allocated an unofficial CLUB handicap of 72 (4 shots per hole) as soon as they progress to the blue tees and, through numerous competitions run on the blue tees, can reduce their handicap to 30 at which point they will progress to the Yellow (for boys) or Red (for girls) tees.

- Yellow/Red Tee Course - This is the full course which everyone plays.

Once a junior has successfully progressed to the Yellow/Red tees, there are numerous competitions to play in, both at Saltford and at other courses, junior league matches vs. other clubs in the area (home and away) and a week-long tour most years which is always very popular. We also run an annual 3 day Blue Tee Tour to Ashbury Manor in Devon.

Successes

We are immensely proud of the fact that 3 of our juniors, won the English Junior Champion Club competition in 2019, held at the England Golf HQ at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire.

Summary

With junior membership fees starting at well under £1 per week and a selection of pre-used clubs and bags (adequate for the new starter) being available to borrow, golf is not an expensive game to take up and we would encourage you to give golf a try.

We have a comprehensive Child Protection Policy in place and have achieved our Safe Golf accreditation. Our overriding policy is to keep our junior members safe from harm, to try and ensure that they all reach their full potential, and to ensure that no junior is excluded for any reason. Most importantly, we aim to provide all juniors, whether it is an 18 year old who plays for the county or the newest 6 year old who has just joined, with a safe and fun environment and that they can look at Saltford Golf Club as their club.

If you have any questions at all on junior golf membership at Saltford, please contact David Phillips, one of our junior organisers on 07968873130.
